Zusammenfassung The behaviour regarding the flame stability and the pollutant emissions of a porous burner containing a reticulated ceramic structure made of SiSiC was experimentally investigated. The present experimental results show that introducing the SiSiC sponge into the combustion zone results in up to ten times higher burning velocities compared with laminar flames for the investigated range of air excess ratios. A study of the influence of the pore size on flame stabilization revealed information about the relative importance of the different mechanisms for the internal heat recirculation in a sponge featuring very high heat conductivity and emissivity. Measurements of the pollutant emissions showed that the porous burner can be operated under conditions where both, nitric oxides and carbon monoxide concentrations are very low.
